I have learned a lot about the panama canal from this project. I have found put many many interesting things I did not know. The panama canal was man made and it connected the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. It was the largest and toughest projects ever undertaken. I think the panama canal was the greatest thing that ever got built, it saved lots of miles and time for the trailing ships.
The Panama was going into plan way back in the 16 century. The first attempt to build the canal was way back in 1880. that attempt failed and killed 21,900 workers. Then in the 1900's the United States took over control and opened it in 1914. They had a lot of problems when they built the canal. Disease's broke out such as malaria and yellow fever. By the time the project was completed there was a total of 27,2500 French and American efforts. The opening was very very successful when it opened. By the year 2008 there was a total of 14,702 vessels passed through the waterway with a total 309.6 million Panama Canal tons. The canal consists of artificial lakes, several improved and artificial channels, and three sets of locks. An additional artificial lake, Alajuela Lake known during the American era as Madden Lake acts as a reservoir for the canal. The layout of the canal as seen by a ship passing from the Pacific end to the Atlantic is as follows
